Northern soul time

> April 22nd, 2009 ---

A dozen proper northern soul 45s here, all from original US first issues, just the way it should be. Mainly classics, and mainly very well known to those who are into this kind of thing, but may be a pleasant introduction (I hope) to some who aren't. People keep telling me I've sold all my northern soul 45s.  I don't think so.

Tracks here (straight music and no chatter) are :

The Belles Words can't explain (Mirwood) I've always preferred this side to the recently revived (and admittedly equally brilliant)  Don't pretend. This is the sort of record that makes you glad to be alive. And I'm not joking.

Kenny Carlton Lost and found (Blue Rock) another stunning double sider. Classic uptempo northern soul brilliance.

Betty Moerer Speed up (Wand) One of the finest femme soul protestations out there. An evergreen oldie that I never tire of.

Miracles Way over there (Tamla) My favorite Motown 45. Very early Miracles here, and it has the awesome "If your mother only knew" on the flip. Please don't tell me the Edwin Starr version is even remotely comparable.....

Shirley Lawson One more chance (Backbeat) double siders are a recurring theme here....anyone who has ever been in a relationship in difficulties should reach for this beauty and if you've never needed it (even if you didn't know it) then you must be very lonely or very, very lucky. One of the most beautiful records ever in the whole world.

The Demures Raining teardrops (Brunswick) Lovely pleading and relatively rare Chicago mid tempo.

Patrice Holloway Love and desire (Capitol) More hormone packed soulful genius from Brenda Holloway's sister.

Timothy Wilson Hey girl (do you love me) (Veep) Fantastic. I can relate to it.

George Kirkby What can I do (Cadet)

Eartha kitt Anyway you want me (Scepter) I think I prefer the flip "There comes a time" but this is a Mike Terry stomper and well worthy of inclusion

The Superiors I'd rather die (Sue) relatively obscure early 70's barnstormer

The Trends If you don't dig the blues (ABC) yet another stunning double sider, and one of dozens of simply brilliant tracks cut by this absolutely top group.

Back to the future? 80’s mix number 1

> April 9th, 2009 ---

14 track (or thereabouts) mix of 80's records I like so much, I kept them on 7" singles.  These are all from between 1980-84, mainly circa 1982. I've resisted to urge to bang on about each track about why I'm so fond of them.

Tracks are:

1. Soft Cell  It's a mugs game (stunning UK B side that got a main release in the US of all places despite it referring to Americans being able to get away with murder..... I don't think Soft Cell ever got any better than this..)

2. Stephen "Tin Tin" Duffy  Kiss me (one of those semi forgotten 80's  records that were probably too poppy at the time to want to admit to liking, but actually stand up well....)

3. The Teardrop Explodes When I dream (their second single and a top top sound).

4. Kraftwerk Computer Love (needs no explanation)

5. Malcolm McClaren The double dutch (think of him what you might, but this is really ground breaking stuff for the time and it's as catchy as hell)

6. Scritti Politti - Wood beez (definitely the weakest track of this selection but I threw it in on impulse - I'm already regretting it and I think it sounds like it's playing with a slight warp which doesn't help matters....)

7. Split Enz I got you (slightly weedy pop hit that just struck a chord in my memory for some reason.... hormones, who'd have them....)

8. China Crisis Christian (an absolute masterpiece. Brilliant.)

9. Kirsty McColl They don't know (I only have this on a slightly warped pic disc which sounds in the recording. Bitter sweet kitchen sink teen drama magic, so good that Kirsty wannabe Tracy Ullman covered it shortly after - and had a bigger hit if I recall.... RIP Kirsty).

10. The Specials Ghost town (simply one of the finest records ever made and in the context of the time it came out, it was absolutely staggering).

11. Monsoon Ever so lonely (superb relatively early Asian music pop intervention - I seem to recall that the lead singer was in grange hill previously, or maybe Eastenders, anyway, it's a stunning and mesmerising track from long before Cornershop was ever invented).

12. The Human League Keep feeling fascination (I could have picked any one of 30 Human League records and I picked this one because it reminded me of a particular spring evening spent in the Shires pub. You'd understand if you'd been there).

13. The Undertones Get over you

14. Orange Juice Rip it up (an appropriate way to finish I think, or not to....)

Soul Glue mellow in the Spring

> April 9th, 2009 ---

A choice selection of quality rare soul 45s from the 60's and 70's, plenty of mellower choices, and just right for the beginning of springtime if you ask me, which you didn't.  I say rare, as in "not in the charts" - some of these are moderately rare, many aren't, but they're all superb - and that's actually what matters.

Tracks included here are as follows, and all recorded from original 45s (so you can't blame me for the crackles)

Crossfire Take me back (Virtue)

Robert Ward I will fear no evil (Groove City)

Chubby and the Turnpikes I didn't try (Capitol) (they later went on to become Tavares, and the rest is history....)

Regina Sherard Helpless baby (King)

The Trends Not another day (ABC)

Darrow Fletcher My judgement day (Groovy)

Dave Love Band Colalined baby (Solid Soul)

Neil Reed Got to find a way (Music Now)

Carla Thomas Something good (Stax)

The Third Time Around Soon everything's gonna be alright (Denine)

The TSU Toronados Play the music toronados (Volt)

Aaron Neville Let's live (Minit)

Hope ya like em!
